Asia’s First Joseph Nicéphore Niépce Memorial Established in Mavelikara, Kerala, India.
The world of photography is taking a historic step towards truth and recognition. The first-ever Joseph Nicéphore Niépce Memorial in Asia has been established at Vathikulam, Mavelikara, Kerala , India.
Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, a French inventor, created the world’s first successful photograph in 1827 – “View from the Window at Le Gras.” Despite his monumental contribution, his name has often been overshadowed in popular history, with many mistakenly celebrating World Photography Day on August 19 without reference to Niépce’s true legacy.
The Mavelikara memorial aims to:
Honor Niépce as the true father of photography.
Correct historical misconceptions and educate the global community.
Inspire the younger generation with authentic history.
“This memorial is not just a statue – it is a beacon of truth,” said the organizers. “It reminds the world that Joseph Nicéphore Niépce must be remembered, respected, and celebrated.”
As part of the initiative, a global campaign ‘True Photography Day’ will soon be launched to replace misleading celebrations with a historically accurate remembrance of Niépce’s invention.

The Memorial
Photography is more than an art—it is memory made eternal. Yet, the man who first captured the world in light, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, remains overshadowed in history. In 1827, Niépce produced “View from the Window at Le Gras,” the earliest surviving photograph, and gave humanity the gift of visual memory. But after his death, recognition drifted away, and the world forgot the true pioneer.
The Joseph Nicéphore Niépce Foundation, based in Mavelikkara, Kerala, has taken up the mission to restore Niépce to his rightful place in world history. Asia’s first-ever memorial for Niépce is rising here, in the cultural soil of Kerala, as a beacon of remembrance and respect.
Our website carries this story forward—to tell the world about the forgotten genius, to share the progress of the memorial at Vathikulam, and to connect photographers, historians, and art lovers everywhere with the true legacy of photography.
“To honor Niépce is to honor the very birth of photography.”
